Bring your U of A student ID and have it ready at the door for check-in. Bring plenty of copies of your résumé to give to recruiters. If you need to update your résumé please attend Résumé Rescue, utilize VMock, or make a career coaching appointment. We will have a backpack check for any items you may need to bring with you if you are headed to class before or after the fair.

Additional campus career fairs are hosted by the University Office of Career Connections.

Please be sure to download the Handshake App prior to the event. You will be able to check-in with employers at the event through a QR code. Your check-in allows:

  1. Our connections team to know which companies students are interested in
  2. Gives employers a curated list of students who visited their booth
  3. Gives students a list of companies to follow-up with or connect with more throughout the school year

Career Fair Preparation Tips for Students

Make the most of your career fair by being prepared! Read this checklist and make a plan. For help with your plan make an appointment with a career coach or attend the career fair pre-party which happens prior to the fair.

Before heading to the career fair be sure to update your résumé. You can review your résumé in VMock and visit with Walton Career Connections at résumé review workshops. Attend Résumé Rescue prior to the fair to have your résumé reviewed by industry professionals. Bring 10-20 copies of your résumé to the fair to ensure you have enough.

Browse the list of companies attending the fair on Handshake and highlight your top five to ten. Research each company’s website or social media to find a few things that interest you about the company or the position.

Other factors to consider include: Does their work interest you? Are they in a state of growth? Do they offer training and professional development opportunities?

Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch to introduce yourself to recruiters. Your pitch should include the following information: your name, what you do (your major, most impressive skills and accomplishments), and what your career interests are (Are you seeking an internship or a full-time position? When?). Practice saying it out loud until it flows easily and confidently.

If you would like more pitch practice or feedback on your elevator pitch prior to the career fair, attend the Pitched Perfect event, information can be found on Handshake.

Dress professionally as if you were going to a real job interview. Business casual at a minimum is strongly encouraged to attend the career fair. If you need any business casual clothing please come visit the Walton Career Closet or the Career Connections office prior to the event.

When you’ve done your company research you can formulate questions to ask each company. After a quick introduction, ask a question based on your research, such as “I’d like to learn more about the project areas for the marketing internship.”

For many recruiters, the follow-up is the most important part. Email your top leads within one week, picking up where the discussion left off. Don’t be discouraged if they ask you to apply online – most companies require it. Just apply and thank the recruiter, letting them know you applied.
